Finally, a vegan deodorant that works all day, even when you are active!
Are we really going to go there, are we going to talk about a vegan deodorant that works? Yes we are. Because this is a true challenge, as you may have experienced yourself, and when I find a product that delivers and keeps my armpits happy, I need to share!

What’s wrong with my regular antiperspirant / deodorant?
Search the Internet, and you will find tons of articles on the aluminum found in antiperspirants (which blocks your sweat glands) and whether it causes cancer, especially breast cancer. There are tons of sites warning you to avoid antiperspirants because of their aluminum content, and others telling you it’s perfectly safe. Here’s a recent video on the subject, but feel free to read up on the subject to make up your own mind.
This said, I personally prefer to let my armpits sweat naturally, as this is a regulatory function of your body. Sweating helps regulate body temperature, it’s particularly important when you are exercising. This is why I have switched to using a deodorant, instead of an antiperspirant.
Now, most popular brands of antiperspirants and deodorants have one major issue: they are made by companies that test their products on animals. So, not only is it important, as a vegan, to find a deodorant that contains no animal-derived ingredients, such as chitosan, propolis and stearic acid, but also that is made by a cruelty-free company.
My journey to find a vegan deodorant that works
In my post on the best toothpaste for canker sores, I told you about my love affair with the company Kiss My Face. It was very natural then for me to turn to this company to try their vegan deodorant. Since my skin is very sensitive, I bought their fragrance-free, active life deodorant stick.
When I first applied this Kiss My Face deodorant, the product left my armpits feeling wet and sticky, so I ended up walking around the house, flapping my arms like a chicken. I had to get dressed and go to work, so the flapping had to stop before my armpits felt completely dry. Not a great feeling.
Unfortunately, after a few hours at the office, my armpits starting feeling humid again. It didn’t help that I was wearing an acrylic sweater (vegans don’t wear wool, right?) and that it was a bit warm inside. I returned home with smelly armpits and a sweater that needed to go in the wash.
I then turned to another brand, Tom’s Of Maine Long Lasting Deodorant, Unscented. This is the same brand my boyfriend uses, and he’s quite happy with it. Fortunately for him (and me!), my boyfriend’s sweat doesn’t smell strong, even after exercising. And this might be why this product works for him, because it was another failure for me. I don’t expect to stay completely dry with a deodorant, as it does not block sweat like an antiperspirant would. But I’d like to stay fresh, and it didn’t happen.
My Schmidt natural deodorant review (it’s vegan!)
After two failures, I figured I would do some research before making another purchase. I read through several Facebook posts and started to see a pattern emerging. Either folks were making their own deodorant (not there yet), either they had had great success with this one brand: Schmidt’s natural deodorants.
Schmidt’s deodorants are made in Portland, US. They are aluminum-free, and also free of harmful phthalates and parabens. All the ingredients are vegan, and this is a cruelty-free deodorant, certified by Leaping Bunny and PETA.
I figured I had nothing to lose. I debated between getting the convenient stick format, or a jar, and finally settled on a small jar of their bergamot-lime deodorant. I liked the idea of being able to use tiny quantities of the deodorant at the beginning, to test how my skin would react.
First, let me tell you how amazing the bergamot-lime deodorant smells: it remind me of Summer! The smell is not overpowering, it just gives a wonderful hint of freshness when you apply the deodorant. The jar comes with a little spatula, allowing you to scoop a tiny amount of deodorant (the size of a small pea). You warm the deodorant between your fingers and apply. Once applied, it hardly feels like you have anything on. It goes on dry and is well absorbed by the skin.
I’ve used this deodorant for several weeks now, and let me tell you: it works. It works on days when you have to power-walk to a meeting, on days when you work out, on days when you dressed up a bit too warm for the weather, on days when it’s really warm outside. Now, as this is a deodorant and not an antiperspirant, you will feel some moisture at times, but nothing like other brands. And no smell.
Let me repeat that: no smell.
And after all these weeks, I barely made a dent in the content of the jar. People who have used it say it lasts about three months. So for the price, it’s well worth it!
If you do not care for applying your deodorant with your fingers, Schmidt’s deodorants are also available in stick format. You can also buy an unscented version.
Still on the fence about this amazing vegan deodorant that actually works? Don’t take my word for it, do your own research in Facebook and read the online reviews. See what folks who have purchased this vegan deodorant have to say about it. Here’s are a few sample reviews:
So see? It is possible to buy a vegan, cruelty-free deodorant and have happy, fresh-smelling armpits! You’re welcome!
